Brown Eyes
Locale: hilly, winding, two-lane state road, lake side
Time: almost midnight
Call: motor vehicle accident, with PI
Intro: It was the drivers' birthday, and she'd been celebrating. Having been refused by 3 establishments, she went to a fourth where she could order without having contact with the bartender.
After leaving that establishment, she and a male companion, headed back into town. At a speed in excess of 90 miles an hour.
Just after passing the second bay, she hit the shoulder of the road, over-compensated, went through a pressure treated fence. At this point, her companion's head, which had been hanging out the window, ripped bark off the tree. The truck pivoted, turned right, proceeded up a small incline, hit another fence, did a 180 (head to tail), and came to rest facing down hill.
I was not the first one on scene. Hearing two of our people calling the driver by name was bone chilling. They weren't speaking or attempting to treat the passenger.
The driver was a rapid extrication, because her airway was completely occluded. Whether she'd even make it to the road was iffy.
The passenger was obviously beyond hope.
What will haunt me forever about this call was one of the younger guys coming up to me in the road, looking at me with his huge brown eyes and saying, "I went to school with them."
 And I couldn't fix it.
