Wondering what an animal skating has to do with having a new (rented) home???

We moved in in January.

We found the house through a "friend". (We haven't spoken to him for months!)

The house is situated in a ridge and has a beautiful view (from the back kitchen window) of three mountains. It is surrounded on three sides by fields. So quaint, it even has an ancient cemetery under the old oak tree.

We learned quite alot moving in there. Like:

The people who were living there when we looked at the house weren't quite honest with us. The house is NOT insulated.

Not only was the house not insulated, the inside of the refrigerator was (literally) warmer than the kitchen until the old woodstove was really cranking.

If you're going to heat with wood, you need someplace to put the ashes.

Antique enamel diaper pails were MADE for cooling ashes.

You have wrapped all your fragile glassware in clothing to prevent breaking. So now the clothing needs washing... . . .

KNOW WHAT???

Chances are that if the fridge is warmer than the kitchen, the mudroom pipes are frozen!!!!

SO YOU WAIT FOR THE SPRING THAW!!!

Meat defrosts very well if you set it by the woodstove, especially if you remember to turn it around on a regular basis.

If your home is surrounded on three sides by large fields, when there's a blizzard you can mow the lawn by the front door, but there's a twenty foot drift at the bottom of the driveway.

Telling your rather snobbish mother that the sugar shack is full of llama **** is not a wise idea, even if it IS the truth.

Hunters will show up at your door wanting to use the phone. Make them park their guns at the door. In return, they may bring you some venison steaks.

The farm pond, 1/4 mile further up the ridge through the fields, makes a wonderful private skating rink. During the summer, the water was too frigid to swim in.

WHADDYA MEAN THE SUMP PUMP IS NOT WORKING 'CUZ IT'S SUBMERGED???

The bus drops your child off IN THE DRIVEWAY!

This place even confused the animals. The fox didn't build her den under the chicken coop, she built it under the corn shed.

Bear, moose, deer, fox, coydogs, etc. were frequent visitors.

Try explaining to a five year old that the moose can't POSSIBLY fit through the window and it's OK to open it when you want to.

The place was, and still is, afire trap. We lasted there a year. Moved in in a snowstorm, moved out during a monsoon. (Thank God we moved DOWN mountain, and Thank God for the canoe!!!)
